Family Guide to Dental Health

Dental care can be difficult to stay on top of when you have multiple members in your family. When establishing healthy dental routines, it’s important to keep everyone on the same page. We’ve compiled a few simple tips and tricks to keep your family’s smiles in tip-top shape!

1. Attend Your Regular Cleanings

One of the most important aspects of your oral care is getting a professional dental cleaning every six months. At this appointment, our expert team will clean off the accumulated plaque and tartar teeth from your teeth, as well as monitor any changes in your oral health. When we detect problem areas in their earliest stages, we can often prevent further damage and reduce your risk of needing tooth extractions and restorative dental care later.

2. Follow a Daily At-Home Dental Routine

While visiting our office every six months is absolutely necessary, it’s not the only thing that will prevent dental problems from occurring. Following a consistent oral hygiene routine at home is equally as important as your regular exams. Brush your teeth at least twice per day with a fluoridated toothpaste, floss daily, and regularly rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash.

3. Make Smile-Friendly Meals

If you have school-age children, make a conscious effort to pack lunches that are both yummy and safe for their teeth. Foods and drinks with added sugar encourage the growth of bacteria and will increase your child’s risk of bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Instead of juice boxes, pre-packaged goodies, candy, potato chips, and white bread, send your child to school with tooth-healthy foods and beverages like water, milk, fresh fruit, crunchy veggies, hummus, string cheese, and whole grains.

4. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

Once you’ve established a healthy dental routine, repetition is key. If you and your children make it a regular habit to brush your teeth every morning and night, you eventually won’t even have to think twice about it. When you notice your family has been doing a good job keeping up with their oral health, plan a special outing or family game night to celebrate!
