Can Veneers Be Whitened?

whitened veneers

Summer is around the corner, and whiter teeth are a great summer accessory. If you’ve been considering whitening your teeth this summer, you’re in luck — we offer laser teeth whitening that delivers quick results. If you’re interested in whitening your veneers, however, we’ve got some bad news. Veneers are made from porcelain, and traditional whitening treatments do not work on porcelain. Veneers can only be whitened before they are placed on your teeth. But don’t worry: we’ve got some tips for improving the appearance of your dental veneers.

Will My Veneers Stain Over Time?

Because veneers are made from porcelain, they do not absorb stains the same way your natural teeth do. In fact, with good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, your veneers should last from ten to twenty years. Just like your natural teeth, you should brush twice daily, floss each day, and visit our office regularly for cleanings and exams to prolong the life of your veneers.

What If My Veneers Appear Darker Than My Natural Teeth?

If you’ve had your veneers for a while, it is possible that they were made from a different material than the one we use now. In the past, veneers were created from a more porous material that was more susceptible to staining. To restore your smile, you may want to consider replacing your veneers.

How Can I Replace My Veneers?

At Pier Dental Care, our first step in determining whether we should replace your dental veneers is a consultation. At your consultation, we will talk about your goals for your smile and examine your oral health and the status of your current veneers. If you and Dr. Cegielski agree that it’s time to replace your veneers, we’ll first remove the old ones. Then, we may need to remove a small amount of your natural tooth to ensure the correct fit and bonding. We’ll ensure that your new veneers are the right color to give you the white smile you want. Next, we’ll attach your new veneers to the surface of your tooth using a special light-sensitive resin. You’ll leave our office with a smile you won’t be able to wait to show off!
