What is Invisalign® and how does it work?

Invisalign - straighten teeth

The appearance of one’s smile has a big impact on self-image. Orthodontic alignment not only improves the appearance of a smile, but can reduce other dental, health, and speech concerns such as tooth decay, bone loss, chipped teeth, and speech impairment.

Dental braces are typically thought of as a treatment best suited for young adults and adolescents. You may not know that healthy teeth can be moved at any age. It’s almost never too late to enhance your smile or reduce the discomfort of a bad bite.

Fortunately, with modern advancements, metal braces are no longer the only choice for orthodontic treatment. Plastic options, such as Invisalign®, have several benefits including a discreet look and more comfortable feel. In addition, plastic braces can be removed for short periods of time, such as during meals, so that patients no longer need to worry about getting food caught in the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces.

Invisalign® is available from your local dentist and works by using a series of custom made aligners to gradually shift your teeth into place. The aligner trays are made from smooth, clear plastic that are worn almost invisibly over the teeth. The aligners are updated approximately once every two weeks until the desired results are achieved.

Invisalign® is best suited for patients who don’t require extreme adjustments. Speak to you family dentist to learn more about whether this option is right for you.
